The ten-year National Service Framework for mental health draws to an end in November. Meanwhile, the results of the New Horizons consultation are due to be published at the end of this year.
In this changing policy environment, Mental Health Today offers a platform for debate and sharing of knowledge and innovation, and will explore the future direction of mental health.

As the event partner, the National Mental Health Development Unit has worked closely with Pavilion to create a programme that facilitates discussion and relationship-building across the sector.
We’ve a large programme of seminars and to help you make the most of the day, they have been divided into four strands. You can either follow through just one of the four strands, or move from one to another, depending on your interests.
With the government’s New Horizon’s document due to be launched in December these sessions look at how achievable the policy goals are for those working in the service – and whether people on the receiving end will notice a difference.
This strand looks at two key government interventions designed to help make services the best possible.
This strand looks at the special needs of particular groups of people. Each session has only two speakers offering the chance for a more in-depth look at service provision in these areas. BME issues will be dealt with throughout all these sessions.
This strand looks at the measures that can be taken to reduce the incidence of mental ill health through preventive measures.
Arts Zone
CoolTan Arts believes mental well-being is enhanced by the power of creativity. CoolTan Arts operates a vibrant arts centre in Southwark’s lively Walworth Road, near Elephant and Castle, with a public art gallery and an urban garden.
We provide a broad programme of activities run by and for adults experiencing mental distress. They include: creative workshops, exhibitions, fashion shows, public art projects, monthly Largactyl shuffle walks, volunteering opportunities, self-advocacy training and websites.
Providing meaningful opportunities, creative expression and the opportunity to learn useful skills, CoolTan Arts empowers participants in their own lives and helps break down the stigma of mental distress. We achieve this through quality arts education with professional outcomes, such as public exhibitions and social enterprise principles.
We aim to promote positive mental health and well-being, bringing about a change in how participants perceive themselves, enabling people to gain greater focus and to re-establish their relationship with society. We aim to offer lifelong learning.
CoolTan Arts enables 15% of people a year who use the facilities to move on into the wider community, employment, college, volunteering or other forms of empowerment.
Time to Change Zone
Time to Change is England’s biggest programme to end mental health discrimination. Throughout 2009, Time to Change has been campaigning to change public attitudes and behaviour towards mental health, as well as working in communities to improve mental well-being and empower people with mental health problems to speak out and challenge discrimination.
The Time to Change roadshow, which is at Mental Health Today, has been touring town centres and party conferences across England to bring the messages of the campaign to local communities. Visit the roadshow to find out more about Time to Change and how you can get involved. You can hear from people about their own experiences of mental health problems and sign up to our ‘visual pledge’. The pledge is a mosaic of faces and photos to show the support that there is for ending the stigma and discrimination that the one in four of us who experience mental health problems face. Come and visit us to join the movement today!
Time to Change is run by the leading mental health charities Mind and Rethink, and evaluated by the Institute of Psychiatry, King’s College, London. Funded with £16 million from the Big Lottery Fund and £4 million from Comic Relief, the programme is founded on an international evidence base and has people with direct experience of mental health problems at its heart.
Programme subject to change.
