Delivering savings in adult social careDate: 24 November 2010
Adult social care is the largest single service provided by local authorities. It has not been protected from expenditure cuts – unlike hospitals or schools – and will have to make real savings over the rest of the decade. At the same time it faces unprecedented increases in demands for its services. This conference will examine some new approaches to services which have delivered real sustainable savings while protecting frontline services. Many of these approaches are being, or have been, successfully replicated elsewhere. They are tried and trusted techniques which others can apply to reduce costs and protect frontline services in their own authorities. Aims of the conference To examine how recent new approaches to managing services, working in partnership with providers and the NHS have helped very differing authorities deliver sustainable savings while protecting and in some cases improving frontline services. Specific case studies will identify: • how a large county council has achieved over £1m of savings on long-term placements • how the development of the reablement service in a London borough has led to significant cost reductions and reduced the number of re-admissions among vulnerable groups to hospitals and nursing homes • how joint working across health and social care has delivered real improvements to service users and patients and resulted in real sustainable cost savings.
