The report addresses the problematic relationship between employment and housing for people with learning disabilities. In the UK, access to one seems often to prohibit or complicate access to the other, with the only successful exceptions occurring 'despite the system not because of it' (Simons and Ward, 1989) Paid Work and Housing compares the French and UK systems of providing related employment, support and housing for people with learning disabilities, focusing on and exploring the extent to which these systems facilitate opportunities to access work and housing. It identifies and describes a range of employment-related projects in the UK and France, exploring strengths and weaknesses of both system, and canvassing the opinions of those providing, and importantly those using, the services. With upcoming policy changes expected in this area in the UK, it aims to put the views of people with learning disabilities firmly on the agenda.
The report makes recommendations for the future development of housing and employment options, suggesting ways in which these options include wider community involvement. It will be of interest to a variety of service providers - including commissioners and planners of housing and employment services, independent employers, voluntary societies, advocacy group and independent service providers - and service users, including carers and families.
