Leaving home is a rite of passage towards adulthood which most young people take for granted. For young people with learning disabilities, the decision to leave home usually has to be taken in a more carefully planned way.

Room to Move looks at the practical and emotional issues involved when a young person leaves home to live independently of their family.

The book draws on the experiences of parents and young people, showing how they cope with the move and their new situation after the move. There are practical tips for parents and also views from the people who are the focus of the book - the young people themselves.

While this book is primarily for parents of young people with learning disabilities, it will also be of interest to staff and managers who are working with families and young people making the transition from home to independent living. It will enable them to anticipate and alleviate the emotional and practical concerns of both parent and young people.

Professionals within the social care sector are required to undertake Continuous Professional Development (CPD) by the General Social Care Council (GSCC). Those who use this resource will be able to gain CPD points.
