The drug treatment sector has developed rapidly since the late 1990s. Substantial new investment has resulted in an expanding workforce with many new professionals joining the field as frontline workers, an increasing need for service managers and the advent of commissioning - a completely  new dimensionin the provision of drug treatment services.

With the new money has come the expectation that the drug treatment sector will become not only more professional in all aspects of service delivery, but will be able to demonstrate value for money. In turn,  this has led to more bureaucracy and administration as the demands on upward accountability increase.

All this can be very daunting to new recruits at all levels in the workforce and so the idea of the Essentials Series is to set out the basics to help you in your job working in the drug treatment sector, whether you are a new frontline worker - or find yourself in a new and unfamiliar role as a service manager or commissioner.

Professionals within the social care sector are required to undertake Continuous Professional Development (CPD) by the General Social Care Council (GSCC). Those who use this resource will be able to gain CPD points.
