Government policy on mental health national service framework strategy seeks to include disadvantaged communities in mental health provision, but there is very little teaching done for any staff in lesbian and gay issues.

This innovative resource is for use by mental health services to train mental health workers in working with, and improving practice with lesbians, gay men and bisexuals. Aimed at trainers who work with groups such as psychiatric nurses, psychiatrists, social workers, day centre workers and voluntary mental health organisations.

This resource aims to:
• increase awareness of the particular needs of lesbians, gay men and bisexuals with mental health problems
• decrease prejudiced attitudes and false assumptions about them
• improve organisational and individual practice.

The material in the pack was piloted on training courses run by PACE in 2000 and 2001. It is based on academic research illustrating bad practice towards lesbians, gays and bisexuals, including PACE’s own research project into the experiences of lesbian, gay men and bisexual mental health service users funded by the DoH and published in 1998.

The training comprises two sections with exercises which can be used in a variety of combinations. It provides a clear, step-by-step guide through the exercises.

Professionals within the social care sector are required to undertake Continuous Professional Development (CPD) by the General Social Care Council (GSCC). Those who use this resource will be able to gain CPD points.

Format: ringbound resource (100pp) including trainer resources and OHP slides.
