Epilepsy and Learning Disabilities provides instructors/trainers with relevant material to deliver training to care and residential staff on epilepsy and its management, particularly relating to epilepsy in people with learning disabilities.
The pack has been designed in two sessions:
Session A: Introduction to Epilepsy is flexible so that a wide range of organisations can use it, including residential care homes, education facilities, NHS establishments, social services establishments and independent sector/local authorities.
Session B: Administration of Rectal Diazepam looks at when to administer rectal diazepam, and the principles and safety aspects of the procedure for administration. Because this is and invasive medical procedure, Session B ,ust be taught by a qualified nurse.
The pack offers step-by-step instructions and all the materials needed to deliver the training, including two DVDs; The Right Stuff: facts and first aid for epilepsy is used in Session A and Rectal Diazepam in Session B.
Professionals within the social care sector are required to undertake Continuous Professional Development (CPD) by the General Social Care Council (GSCC). Those who use this resource will be able to gain CPD points.
